This glowing blue powder killed four people and contaminated an entire city and it wasn't a nuclear reactor. In 1987 in Goiânia Brazil two scavengers found an abandoned medical machine in a demolished clinic. They thought it was just scrap metal but inside they discovered a small capsule containing Cesium-137. To them it looked like a miracle because it glowed with a beautiful mesmerizing blue light in the dark. Fascinated by the discovery they shared the powder with friends and family. A six-year-old girl even ate a sandwich with her hands covered in the glowing dust thinking it was magic. Within days everyone started falling deathly ill. It became the world’s worst radiological accident outside of a nuclear plant. The cleanup required the demolition of several houses and produced six thousand tons of radioactive waste that are still buried in lead containers today.
