On July 13, 2014, 18-year-old Conrad Roy III was found dead in his truck from carbon monoxide poisoning. Initially perceived as a tragic suicide, the situation took a darker twist when police examined his phone. His girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter, had sent numerous messages urging him to take his life. When Conrad hesitated and stepped out of his truck, Michelle texted: "Get back in." He complied. In a groundbreaking legal case, Michelle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter solely based on her text messages. The case stirred a national debate: Can words alone make someone culpable for another's suicide? Michelle served 11 months in prison and was released in 2020.
