âThe Fight for Decent Hoursâ âIn 1910, working from seven in the morning until eleven at nightâ16 hours a dayâwas common. We lived on the edge. I worked in a textile factory. The noise of the machines was deafening, there was no rest, and many colleagues and even children fainted from exhaustion. Those who didnât bring food from home didnât eat. The sick produced less and were paid less, and anyone who complained was quickly replaced. Groups began meeting in secret to fight for better conditions. Thatâs how the union was born. It wasnât easyâpersecuted, we managed to reduce the workday to 12 hours, and later to 8. That was the beginning of it all. Without this âunionâ of workers, weâd still be exploited. Today, Iâm grateful. Thank you for your courage, union.â
